Introduction

About Us: The Heather Cutler Foundation is a Canadian non-profit organization dedicated to supporting individuals and families affected by pancreatic cancer. Our mission is to honor the legacy of Heather Cutler by advocating for pancreatic cancer awareness, supporting groundbreaking research, and providing resources for those affected by this devastating disease.

Mission Statement

Mission: At The Heather Cutler Foundation, we’re rewriting the playbook on pancreatic cancer advocacy in Canada. Inspired by Heather—a registered nurse who dedicated over 35 years to her community—our foundation is built on her journey from caregiver to patient, which exposed the flaws and inequities in Canada’s healthcare system, especially in smaller provinces. As a family, we know this experience firsthand.

• We’re not here to wait; we’re here to act. Heather’s care journey taught us how families facing pancreatic cancer encounter barriers at every turn, particularly in accessing essential tools like somatic testing and clinical trials—tools that research shows improve outcomes. But pancreatic cancer doesn’t discriminate, and Canada’s healthcare system shouldn’t either. Seeking second opinions in the U.S. brought home a painful truth: invisible borders and postal codes within Canada often dictate who gets a chance to fight and who doesn’t.

• Our mission is to honor Heather’s legacy by advocating for national guidelines that mandate oncologists to follow uniform protocols. We aim to support groundbreaking research and ensure every Canadian, regardless of location, has equitable access to life-saving resources. Through our work, we strive to create a future where no one is denied care or opportunity based on geography, and where families facing pancreatic cancer receive the support, access, and hope they deserve.

Vision

Vision: We envision a world where pancreatic cancer is no longer a death sentence but a manageable and curable condition. By advocating for national guidelines that require oncologists in every province to follow up-to-date protocols and to integrate discussions of clinical trials and molecular profiling, we aim to transform pancreatic cancer care across Canada.

• Currently, the path to improving survival rates is obstructed by an outdated healthcare system that has not evolved to embrace the rapidly advancing field of precision medicine. Without a commitment to informed clinical trial discussions and molecular profiling, patients lose critical opportunities for life-extending treatment options. Canada must act now to prevent falling behind other nations that are restructuring their healthcare pathways to expedite access to precision medicine and innovative therapies.

• Together, we can create a future where equitable, state-of-the-art care is accessible to all, improving outcomes and survival rates for those affected by pancreatic cancer.
