How Ontario scored, category by category
1 · Strategy & pancreatic focus
3 / 4Ontario Cancer Plan 6 (2024–2028) sets five goals — equity, patient experience, system integration, workforce sustainability, research/innovation/data — delivered through 14 Regional Cancer Programs, and references rare and complex cancers with referral pathways; it has no targeted pancreatic initiatives.
2 · Biomarker & genetic testing
4 / 4Ontario's Comprehensive Cancer Biomarker Testing Program provides standardized, province-wide public (OHIP) funding and coordination — covering BRCA1/2 germline, tumour MSI/dMMR, NTRK and other PDAC-relevant markers — with funding in effect since January 1, 2024. It is the benchmark program in the inventories.
3 · Drug coverage & patient costs
4 / 4Ontario operates all three protective mechanisms in the inventories: the Trillium Drug Program (since 1995) caps out-of-pocket drug costs relative to income; the Exceptional Access Program (since 2016) decides case-by-case requests in 3 days to 6 weeks with backdating; the New Drug Funding Program leaves patients at $0 out-of-pocket for covered in-hospital IV drugs. Not obtainable: Ontario's own private-pay share of take-home drug costs is not in the inventories; this score rests on program architecture.
4 · Clinical trials access
4 / 4Ontario is the national concentration point: Princess Margaret reports 21% trial enrolment against ~7% nationally, and the Toronto-centralized COMPASS pancreatic sequencing program operates from Ontario (with one expansion site in Halifax). Ontario is also a CRAFT pilot province.
5 · Timely care — waits & surgical capacity
3 / 4Pancreatic care is delivered within a multi-centre tertiary and regional system — 14 Regional Cancer Programs under Ontario Health. Not obtainable: no Ontario wait-time figure, overall or pancreatic-specific, exists in the inventories.
6 · Travel & transport support
Not assessableNot obtainable: the inventories catalogue travel programs for Atlantic Canada and federal NIHB transport; no Ontario provincial travel-support program is documented in the corpus, so this category cannot be scored for Ontario from this evidence base.
7 · Workforce, navigation & support
3 / 4Workforce Sustainability is a named goal of Ontario Cancer Plan 6, and Ontario runs mature province-wide patient-support infrastructure — the "Your Symptoms Matter" patient-reported outcomes program, active since 2017. Not obtainable: no Ontario-specific workforce adequacy rating or oncology workforce figures exist in the inventories.
8 · Research funding & representation
4 / 4Ontario institutions dominate the national register: University of Toronto (40 records) and University Health Network (30) lead the 270-record CIHR register, and the largest directly-related grant in the register ($2,778,938, Sinai Health) is Ontario-hosted. (The representation inventories measure Atlantic representation only; this score rests on hosted funding and infrastructure.)
