FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
July 2, 2025

St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador — On July 1, 2025, The Heather Cutler Foundation officially submitted its application for registration as a charity under the Income Tax Act through the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA).

This step reflects the Foundation’s ongoing commitment to improving health outcomes, advancing public education, and supporting community-based initiatives for Canadians affected by pancreatic cancer. If approved, the Foundation will gain the ability to issue official tax receipts, receive gifts from other registered charities, and access exemptions from income tax and GST/HST—enhancing its capacity to operate sustainably and expand its public benefit activities.

“Applying for charitable registration affirms our long-term vision,” said Christopher Cutler, Founder and Executive Director. “We are committed to transparency, compliance, and using our resources to benefit Canadians in meaningful and measurable ways.”

To qualify as a registered charity in Canada, an organization must be established and resident in Canada, operate exclusively for charitable purposes, and devote all of its resources to charitable activities.

The Heather Cutler Foundation’s application outlines activities that focus on increasing access to information, supporting community health initiatives, and advancing education about pancreatic cancer in Canada. These programs are designed to meet the CRA’s requirements for charitable registration by demonstrating clear public benefit and alignment with Canada’s recognized charitable purposes.

The Foundation’s current and planned work includes producing accessible educational materials, engaging Canadians through public information campaigns, and contributing to efforts that improve equitable access to health information and services. Many of these initiatives have been developed alongside students from Memorial University of Newfoundland as part of educational outreach and knowledge-sharing efforts.

Registered charities in Canada are held to high standards of recordkeeping, financial reporting, and legal compliance. The CRA will now review the Foundation’s submission for completeness and eligibility. Review timelines typically range from four to six months.

“Becoming a registered charity will allow us to serve Canadians more effectively,” said Cutler. “We’re grateful for the support of our community as we take this next step.”
